Changing rooms at Church View!
05 Jan 2009
A dull storeroom has been transformed into a sparkling new kitchen for residents at Merlin Housing Society’s Church View flats to use for community events.
The kitchen was donated and installed by Connaught, one of Merlin’s partners carrying out the housing society’s £70m programme of home improvements.
The community room at the flats is already well-used by residents who run an after-school club for children. Now they plan to run a series of cookery courses in the kitchen to pass on healthy eating tips.
Resident caretaker Maggie Harris said: “We applied for a grant and got some money to run some healthy eating courses. What we are thinking of doing is aiming things at the children because once they are involved their parents will get involved as well.
“Everyone is really pleased. Connaught has worked really, really hard and I am so pleased with it. I don’t think they could have done a better job. I am really grateful to everyone who has come together to make this kitchen happen.
Connaught started work to install the kitchen on 4 December and it was officially opened by Merlin’s area housing manager Steve Roberts and Connaught director Dave Reynolds. As well as installing the kitchen Connaught also kindly donated a cooker and a fridge/freezer for the communal kitchen.
Mr Reynolds said: “I am thrilled that this community project has been finished so quickly and I hope that the residents of Church View enjoy the results.”
