We've had reports of conmen claiming to be from Merlin phoning customers and demanding money for work that we're going to be carrying out.
In one incident to a customer in Hanham, the caller claimed that Merlin was due to carry out work to the property, but that the customer needed to pay £80 over the phone up-front. Luckily the customer didn't pay and contacted us to query the call.
If you are ever unsure about the identity of someone who calls you on the phone claiming to be from Merlin, take their name and tell them that you will call the office back. Then hang up and call us on 0300 123 2222 to confirm their identity. If it is a genuine call from a member of staff they will not mind you doing this.
And remember never to let someone into your home if you are unsure of their identity. All our employees and contractors have identification badges complete with photograph. You must ask to see an employee’s badge before you let someone claiming to be from us into your home.
If you are unsure who they are, do not let them into your home. Instead, ask for their identification badge and call our offices on 0300 123 2222.
If you call out of office hours (8.30am – 5pm, Monday – Friday) and no-one is available to verify the details, tell the caller that it is inconvenient and that you will re-arrange the visit.
